Science and Astronomy Questions

36247 Could the universe then conceivably be a brain for some much higher being? That's a cool idea, but the speed of light limit would make any transmission between the computational elements of this brain so slow that not even a single though could be made. Brains need to be compact, that's almos...

General suggestions for SpaceEngine

Would be nice to see the known open and globular clusters to be more "life like". I understand that they are filled with procedural stars, but they all have the same density and a constant yellow color. Is there a way that the star generator could look up certain parameters for the known ...

PlutonianEmpire's Imperial Addon Archives

Thanks, I shall get this for 0980!  will it break the procedural worlds already in 0980 and the galaxies, etc?

Wow, nice work, and congratulations with a new discovery! I am still far from implementing of a whole GAIA catalog support. Athough I think that SE will not use all 2 billion stars, because it can render only stars with a good parallax, luminocity and color data. What I need to implement (aside fro...

36201 wow the first video was made in space engine?  how? I loaded our entire dataset as an addon in SpaceEngine, making sure that all stars had unrealistically low magnitudes (so they could be seen from intergalactic distances in the animation). I turned of procedural generation of stars and erase...

Yes I want a setting like this too.  In Starry Night I change the color of the lines to make them dark grey which makes them barely visible (and very thin)

wow the first video was made in space engine?  how?  I love how colorful the stars are and it looks like there is an animated H-R diagram there.  It will be fascinating if by going through all this data we find a new "most luminous star" or "most massive star"!

A very PC discussion

How much is enough when it comes to video memory?  With either 16 GB RAM or 32 GB RAM?  And should the page file be put on an SSD?  I heard it shouldn't be as it will cause wear with all the writes, so I put an 8 GB page file on my secondary (mechanical) hard drive.

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2016/10/alien-life-could-feed-cosmic-rays A bizarre microbe found deep in a gold mine in South Africa could provide a model for how life might survive in seemingly uninhabitable environments through the cosmos. Known as Desulforudis audaxviator, the rod-shaped bacteri...
