Well, here's something I thought I would never be able to capture in a photograph... http://i.imgur.com/N1fEvYD.jpg Noctiluca Scintillans , aka 'sea sparkles' or 'glowing tide'.  The little things light up and sparkle like fireflies when disturbed.  Not a great shot of it, but for being such a dim l...

Total Solar Eclipse 2017

Makes good sense! I've also just acquired a GoPro for recording the period around totality in 4k.  I doubt it will be of exceptional quality in the low light conditions, but hopefully it should suffice for getting the crowd reactions and changing appearance of the landscape and sky.  Mainly I just w...

Can you prove that the Earth isn't a hollow sphere?

Mouthwash , your behavior is strange.  You make this thread under the pretext of seeing if the community can present a proof that the Earth is not hollow, or that we're inside of that hollow.  I interpret it as being posted as a fun intellectual exercise.  You also ask if the arguments given on som...

Total Solar Eclipse 2017

Yes, it will be a glorious 2 minutes. :) midtskogen , in your case I wonder if it might be good to get to Madras, then the morning of, break camp early and drive a bit south before the eclipse starts.  Assuming the road out is passable then, you can move many kilometers from the center line without ...

Planets with potentially breathable atmospheres

It's good to be excited!  Remember, there was a time not all that long ago when nobody was certain if breathable atmospheres like these existed in Space Engine, or how difficult it would be to find them if they did. Nobody had ever found one before!   This feels almost like a virtual equivalent to t...

Total Solar Eclipse 2017

So, does it feel close yet?  Today is the new moon.  The next new moon is the thing!     /getready Traffic: It is going to be NUTS .  But some places will be impacted more than others.  If you plan on driving to the eclipse, know what you're getting into and plan accordingly.  Give yourself enough t...

Planets with potentially breathable atmospheres

Almost!  The CO2's a bit too high, but by the time you move up in altitude enough to make that tolerable, the O2 pressure would be too low. Gnargenox , nice!  I'll call that a breathable one, ignoring the cold of course. I think at this point we've found so many breathable cold deserts it might be g...

Qr Bbpost The storms on this moon are already wacked-out enough, as you can see here!

Wow!  :o

I've seen many a cyclone in Space Engine, but never any storm quite like that before. Susan, get my pants!

Very nice recording.  I wish I had one too, it's so cool. :)

It's interesting how at that distance, the three wave types arrive in a regular interval.  Boom, boom, rumble.  For reference with the wave propagation graphic, that's about 25° away.

Can you prove that the Earth isn't a hollow sphere?

10411 One could do geological science by intentionally detonating nukes, but it's hard for geologists to get that kind of permits... Hahaha, right.  We're fortunate that Earth provides us with even more powerful disturbances to use for measurement, though not so much for those who live close by or ...

Can you prove that the Earth isn't a hollow sphere?

10396 I've read in some of the links that on the other side of the Sun, there is Moon. And that's why we have one side of the Moon. It would take so much light distortion to do that and have both Sun and Moon on one side. And if that's it, why don't we see some of the light on the back of the Moon?...

Can you prove that the Earth isn't a hollow sphere?

Marko S., this thread is about a model which claims we do live inside a hollow Earth, and discussing whether observations are consistent with that or not.  So the model must explain sunsets.

Can you prove that the Earth isn't a hollow sphere?

10383 Dude, the actual arguments are on the website itself! I'm just summarizing what they say. You have to look at the links. I did.  They are no more compelling than your summaries were.  Many of them are even more nonsense the further you go into them.  For example, where they claim that light b...

Can you prove that the Earth isn't a hollow sphere?

10367 Why would it set? Because by observation, it sets.  You can see it go behind the horizon, projecting a shadow up into the sky.  But inside a hollow Earth, there is no horizon for it to set behind. You could try to explain this with some crazy light bending model as the website claims, but you...

Can you prove that the Earth isn't a hollow sphere?

I also thought of using the gravitational time dilation with respect to altitude  as a proof, because it's really cool, beautifully matches what you predict for the field outside a sphere, and is totally incompatible with being inside a hollow sphere.  But I doubt any of us have the precision of mea...
