36287 but only about 1 in a million Far more than that for AZ in Norway.  It was stopped after about 130k doses and several cases of a combination of blood clots and low platelet counts, three of which were fatal.  Milder side effects like hemorrhages and bleeding also seem to be tenfolds higher wi...

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

Here the vaccination started with AZ for younger people (health care personnel) and other vaccines for old people.  AZ was halted in early March, and, though not officially announced yet, I think it will be scrapped, as well as J&J, as the immune response from these vaccines seems likely to kill...

36277 Vaccines for all age groups 16+ across most of the US Apparently, Trump did a much better job than the politicians in European countries regarding vaccines.  Here, the vaccination of the 85+ group started in January, and now three months later >85% of the 75+ group have at least one shot and ...

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Thread

36272 We know the true number of deaths is much higher, because we have been following deaths above normal data. It's complicated.  Using the latest official numbers in Norway, I get a death rate of 0.37% (681 deaths of 182,241 estimated cases - 99,366 confirmed, so below 0.7% for sure), but the me...

Statistics Norway  (the official statistics) just released their data for 2020.  The 2020 number for bed-days due to diseases of the respiratory system is interesting.  I wonder if people will dare to discuss it in light of the covid restrictions. y.png A 15.6% drop in bed-days from 2019 to 2020! Global infection fatality rate is approximately 0.15% with 1.5‐2.0 billion infections as of February 2021 . The fatality rate is in the very lower end of previous estimates, and the estimate of total infections seems very high.  These two estimates influence each other, of course. The author is kno...

Probably way too expensive, but interesting to see how simple rules with feedback resembles nature in so many ways.

More SE related was this video from the same guy:

36100 It also reduces the production of NO2 which is responsible for air pollution and higher asthma rates near big cities.  The centralization is also important as there is much less of an impact where people live and work. True.  It centralises the pollution, which makes it more manageable.  In g...

36077 well those better (higher structured) homes and more EV autos are now being built, so progress is happening even if slowly Both homes and cars move more and more to electricity, which itself doesn't change much.  What it means is that the energy production gets more centralised.  Rather than ...

36064 They stated that just because it is "renewable" doesn't mean it doesn't pose environmental hazards.  Here in NY/NJ we keep it well offshore and are more reliant on hydro. "Renewable" is abused as a sign of something good for the environment, but renewability is independent...

36061 The interesting thing is major oil companies are now investing in renewable tech (solar and wind) because they see that public opinion is against them What they're really doing is dodging risk.  They can't invest into something that is too risky politically.  Unfortunately, the best long term...

I don't believe there is a conspiracy orchestrated by "Big Oil" which has turned the public opinion (and politicians) against nuclear.  I think it's a mix of general scepticism against invisible dangers, greatly exaggerated by environment activists, and all this has been very convenient fo...

36027 I think acitivism is very necessary especially when our dumb politicians are in full on denial mode It's extremely difficult to combine. The trouble is that there are far more people than politicians in denial mode, such as anti fossil activists.  There will be no significant substitute for f...

Unusual weather

Lightning in heavy snow has a pretty special sound.  Just a short "boom", then silence.  No rumble, no echo.  Or just the flash, no sound at all even if the lightning was just a few km away.  Snow is a good absorber of sound!
