Unusual weather

Late April (or early May) snowfalls after the lawn has resurfaced happen in the occasional year in Oslo, but last day's snowfall here was actually the largest one this winter.  It rather points to a remarkable winter than to a remarkable spring.  The second largest snowfall (about 25cm) was on 5 Nov...

General global warming / climate chage discussion

IPCC refers to global changes, which is what's most relevant for global warming.  In my region the sea level is dropping by about 50 cm per century. The bay that I swam in as a kid does seem shallower now (there is not much tidal difference).  It has likely more to do with that I'm taller now than t...

Qr Bbpost Well the lower range of the predictions for 2070 was around 3 feet.

That's above the IPCC upper range.

6550 I think the researchers mentioned that the melting of the Antarctic ice sheet is much faster than anticipated If you put a long string of assumptions into your models, then, of course, you can get all kind of scenarios as output, but a fast, accelerating sea level rise within the next few deca...

Asteroids, meteors, and meteorites

A nice fireball photographed last night by our meteor network: harestua-20170420.jpg The entry speed was 12.8 km/s and the terminal height (against a twilight sky) was 33.1 km.  This makes it a meteorite candidate.  It fell over southern Sweden.  It was only moderately bright, though, so the entry ...

Quite awesome, though it's a bit hard to know the scale in some of the images.  I wonder how much will remain in July. Over here we had early snow this winter, but very little snowfall during the winter, so most was melted by the first warm spell in April.  Fortunately, we've had some fresh snow and...

Astrophotography

A simple and effective way of removing light pollution is to blur the image and subtract that from the original.  Here's what I get for your image (the 800 ISO one): x.jpg It can probably be improved more by adjusting light curves. EDIT: In a Unix shell using ImageMagick:  convert 2.jpg -blur 128x12...

The word "skyskraper" in Norwegian means what it looks like in English, but in Norwegian "sky" is a cloud, which actually is a more fitting name than the English original.  Mini-quiz: Where am I today?

Qr Bbpost Sadly, while the eclipse happened it was cloudy weather in Copenhagen, so i didn't see it

Partial eclipses aren't that bad to lose.  The difference between a 99% and 100% eclipse is greater than the difference between a 1% and 99% eclipse.
