17616 And if the gravitons from the Sun apply enough energy to keep its planets in orbit, shouldn't it be losing magnitudes of order more energy to the gravitons that don't hit a planet? Graviton emission does not carry away energy, so the gravitons that don't interact may as well not exist.  You c...

Are we certain that gravity is a property of space? Gravity is still listed as a fundamental force, and I don't think gravitons have been ruled out. If gravitons are the case, there's no such thing as spatial distortion; that part of general relativity just gives you the same end result. Also, a fin...

Easiest way YOU can find exoplanets from home

My only complaint about that EVE program is that they should have made it more obvious that it's real science. When I started doing the Project Discovery, I thought "So, I guess this is supposed to be for discovering planets around stars in EVE."

Exoplanets news thread

Of course, if you consider dwarf planets like Pluto to be actual planets, then our solar system has the most planets.

R.I.P Internet. I hope i can still visit the SpaceEngine website when the next update is out. The U.S. just became the worst country in the world thanks to 1 decision. I hope net neutrality isn't as bad as it seems. I have a friend who's optimistic about this, because either the politicians will re...

Science and Astronomy Questions

I have a little question about planetary systems. I'm sorry if it has been asked before, because the thread is very long and I didn't find it, so here it goes: Do all systems with planets also have asteroid structures like the Oort's clod? Because I'm making a fictional system and I made an asteroi...

If you add more or better insulation to the shell, then what you're doing is decreasing the rate at which heat can initially flow outward.  But, heat is  still transferred outward, and it must, in order to obey the heat equation.   Heat is transferred from regions of high temperature to low tempera...

16228 Problem 1:  There is some minimum energy required to cause the charge separation.  If the absorbed photon does not pass this energy threshold, then it will simply produce heat.  It will do zero useful work.  This is one reason why you cannot have 100% efficiency in a solar panel.  Another rea...

I wonder what anti-matter's shelf life is? Does it decay at the same rate as normal matter? Is the reason the universe is asymmetrical is because it all fused into Dark Matter? I guess only Math knows. The antimatter's shelf life as well as the shelf's life would be around a few microseconds. I'd n...

15790 The laws of thermodynamics aren't actually laws. They're correlations. What exactly do you mean with this? The conservation of energy (first law of thermodynamics) is quite a law. Maybe you could say that the second law of thermodynamics is a principle or a statistical corollary. Better said:...

On entropy: Laws of Thermodynamics in a nutshell: 1) You cannot win. 2) You cannot break even. 3) You cannot escape from the game. I can't refute this. In the end, entropy will win the war. It's inevitable. But I've just won a hypothetical battle by letting the Earth cool off, while keeping the hea...

How do you think we can get to Proxima b?

Many spacecrafts can be lunched (since the costs are going to be insignificant compared to current car-sized spacecrafts) with tiny differences in the angle of ejection as to make some of them arrive much more closer than 1 AU to the planet.
Nice.

Hey, what if you tried to reverse entropy by surrounding Earth with infra-red sensitive solar panels? (Let's assume that Earth has been teleported into the middle of a big void, because the Sun's march towards entropy is keeping entropy at bay here.) The solar panels would convert all Earth's radia...
